anterville - The musical

The story is set in 1886 at Canterville Chase, where inexplicable events have been taking place for three centuries. Everyone who’s ever lived in the castle has either run away, gone mad or mysteriously died. Survivors talk of a ghost who persecutes anyone daring to reside in the castle. One day, an American family, the Otis’, moves in and everything changes. No matter what the ghost does to scare them away, backfires. Virginia, the young daughter becomes the ghoul’s friend and thanks to her recurring nightmares, she discovers the true origins of this infestation. Meanwhile, Lord Higgins, the last of the Canterville descendants, discovers that within the property he just sold to the Americans, there lies an immense treasure and so he sets out to find it, backed by a would-be soothsayer. While this odd couple wreaks havoc on the castle, Virginia falls in love with Cecil, a young British lord, making Simon tremendously jealous. As the ghost’s distant memories begin to resurface, the dark truth about his past begins haunting him. Will Virginia help Sir Simon solve a three-century-old mystery? Oscar Wilde’s original story was greatly revised and extended and new characters added to give a human face to what originally were comic book-like characters. Love, hate, passion, betrayal and revenge, all intertwine to give this show an all-round appeal for audiences of all ages in a Broadway-style fashion.

Oscar Fingal O'Flahertie Wills Wilde (16 October 1854 – 30 November 1900) was an Irish writer and poet. After writing in different forms throughout the 1880s, he became one of London's most popular playwrights in the early 1890s. Today he is remembered for his epigrams, his only novel (The Picture of Dorian Gray), his plays, and the circumstances of his imprisonment and early death.
